Nuffield Health opens doors of new Cambridge Hospital

An important milestone in P+HS Architects’ long-standing relationship with Nuffield Health sees the completion of a brand new hospital in Cambridge.

Today marks the opening of the new Nuffield Health hospital in Cambridge; two years and five months since the City planning committee gave permission for the hospital to be built on the site.

Phil Bentley of P+HS Architects: “The challenge was to design a contemporary new building to be constructed whilst the existing hospital remained operational. It was also essential to retain the special quality of the site which is characterised by mature trees and attractive landscaped grounds.”

“Feedback from extensive consultation helped to shape the design, with input from clinicians, staff, neighbours, community and local interest groups.  A key requirement of the design was the provision of an exceptional non-clinical environment, whilst incorporating specialist equipment and the latest technology to support the delivery of high quality healthcare”.

The 38-bed hospital includes provision for outstanding inpatient and outpatient services, diagnostics, physiotherapy, operating suite with three theatres, endoscopy and oncology services as well as a pharmacy. Staff areas: a terrace and breakfast bar area, provide break out space from the clinical environment.

The new hospital, built by Simons, marks the successful completion of phase 1.  A second phase of development on the site now begins with the demolition of most of the original hospital, with the retention and refurbishment of one wing to provide the pathology department and medical records as well as staff facilities, offices and meeting rooms. This second phase, all complemented by final landscaping works, will be completed in summer 2016.

Joe Biggs, P+HS Architects Managing Director commented: “The completion of the new hospital in Cambridge is the result of working closely with Nuffield Health over the past 10 years delivering many highly successful projects and forming a close and detailed understanding of their requirements, qualities and values.  Furthermore, P+HS Architects have also had a long and successful relationship with Simons, delivering many complex healthcare projects together.  The Cambridge hospital is evidence of the success that can be achieved as a result of these long term and valued relationships and we are delighted with the result.”

The construction value for the new hospital is £15m with an overall investment by Nuffield Health for the whole scheme of £30m.
