Roundhouse Medical Centre
The Roundhouse health centre is located on a prominent brown field site serving both the Athersley and New Lodge communities of South Yorkshire and is key part of the regeneration of the area. Named the ‘Round House’ in deference to a Roundhouse which formed the gatehouse to the former New Lodge manor house; this influenced the design.
The new centre includes accommodation for NHS Barnsley, GP practices, and a pharmacy. Wide-ranging services on offer include minor surgery, district nursing, health visiting, physiotherapy, child and adolescent mental health, podiatry, speech therapy, family planning, diagnostics, chronic disease management. The design is planned carefully to offer an inclusive, modern environment, around a central public area with reception/waiting areas, public health displays, community artwork, baby/toilet facilities and the pharmacy. All GP patient interface accommodation is located on the ground floor.
The building achieves BREEAM Excellent in line with Government requirements to ensure that new healthcare buildings minimise their environmental impact, reduce running costs and are as sustainable as possible.
Artwork incorporated into the design is by Adele Howitt and forms part of the Barnsley LIFT art programme.
