Darlington Memorial Hospital

We have been working with Vinci Construction under the P21+ framework to refurbish and extend operating theatres for County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust as part of ongoing work to develop the site.

A phased programme of work began in October 2015 to provide 6 new operating theatres at Darlington Memorial Hospital.  Once these new theatres were fully operational, a refurbishment programme began for the existing theatres. Working within a live hospital environment, works were meticulously phased to minimise disruption or downtime: through meticulous planning, this was successfully achieved and the team ensured that at least 9 theatres remained operational at any one time.  Four of the theatres have Ultra Clean Ventilation Canopies(UCV) compatible with integrated scanning procedures and keyhole operations.

The contract also included improvements to the recovery suite, day surgery facilities and the associated post and pre-operative ward areas as well as the provision of a new mortuary suite.

Consultant General Surgeon and the Trust’s Clinical Director for Surgery, Andrew Mitchell described the work to be “of huge importance”. The new investment allows more operations to be carried out with greater flexibility for emergency work. The admissions unit, now adjacent to the theatre suite has smoothed the patient flow and the upgraded mortuary has greatly improved facilities for the bereaved.

The modern facilities are also proving to be an incentive to recruitment, attracting more well qualified staff to work at the hospital, easing pressure and improving quality.
