Kirkwood Hall Extra Care
Constructed on a site at Harmby Road, Leyburn, this new extra care scheme is a partnership between North Yorkshire County Council, Richmondshire District Council, Broadacres Housing Association and its funding and construction partners. It will be owned and managed by Broadacres and staffed 24-hours a day to provide care and support tailored to people’s individual needs and enabling residents to live as independently as possible.
The development comprises 53 units for rent, and includes seven two-bedroom bungalows, 26 two-bedroom apartments and 20 one-bedroom specialist complex needs apartments, a guest suite and a variety of garden and outdoor spaces. Communal facilities: café/lounge/dining area, and hair and beauty room are included, welcoming the wider local community to encourage integration.
The scheme is designed to support a range of needs including physical disability, mobility and sensory impairment, as well as people living with dementia and other age-related frailty and disability. Complex needs apartments are grouped in clusters of ten bedrooms with their own communal dining areas providing shared social space.
The design reflects the architecture of the locality: gabled entrances to the alms-house style bungalows form a strong street frontage; materials and colours throughout the scheme echo the surrounding buildings using local stone, natural stone detailing, and slate roofs.
