We worked together with multiple stakeholders from the NHS and Local Council to provide a unique focal landmark for the people of South Tyneside: Haven Court. Providing for the needs of a growing ageing population, the Council joined forces with South Tyneside NHS to build an Integrated Care Hub supporting elderly residents in the borough. Housing a range of health and social care services, the focus of the new Hub is to improve the health and wellbeing of the region’s residents including those with dementia. Bringing together multiple services under one roof, the facility provides coordinated support to assist people in continuing to live independently in their communities for longer. Streamlining access to information, support and services, the hub provides more choice and offers flexible solutions tailored to the changing needs of older people.
The contemporary, light and welcoming building, thought to be the largest of its type in the UK, offers day services, help and advice, as well as assessments and medical consultation. There is also a gym, cafe and social areas both inside and out with safe access to landscaped courtyard gardens. Spacious en-suite bedrooms offer nursing and residential options for short stay rehabilitation, respite or ‘time to think’ as well as longer term care. The 80 bedrooms are designed in small clusters around open plan living areas, creating a domestic scale and a homely environment. Mini kitchens add to the familiar feel, allowing residents and visitors to make drinks and snacks. For those choosing longer term care, the emphasis is on the provision of a ‘home’ rather than a ‘care home’.
Located at South Tyneside District Hospital the hub benefits from the proximity of hospital services but has its own dedicated entrance and operates very much as a stand- alone facility.
