Yorkshire Dales HQ
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) is a major promoter of sustainable development and as such was heavily involved in the design and briefing process for their new Northern headquarters. The overall aspiration was to provide new, comfortable welcoming and accessible offices for staff, the community and visitors within a cost effective and sustainable building.
The building elements balance contemporary and traditional Dales architecture and uses modern construction methods to achieve a building of suitable mass and scale. Individual features enhance the location yet the design engages sensitively with the landscape. Purpose-built offices of around 11,000 sq ft accommodate 63 staff and there is a large conference space too. Buried under a grassed mound in order to minimise the building’s overall impact on the surrounding natural landscape the conference room is lit and ventilated via a glass covered dome.
Several environmentally friendly features were used in the design in accordance with YDNPA policy. Selected materials were sustainable and, where possible, traditional, local and sympathetic to the local area - natural stone walls and slate roofs.
