Oakwood Lane Medical Centre

Developed on a brownfield site in the Gipton suburb of east Leeds, the new Oakwood Lane Medical Centre replaces two existing outdated GP premises in the area

Providing modern facilities for the Oakwood Lane Medical Practice, the new two-storey building will greatly improve the delivery of primary healthcare for local residents. The design is contemporary and bold vibrant colour and light are used internally to create a positive non-clinical environment for patients and staff. The use of a double height space for the main waiting areas gives a sense of space and openness within the building.  Facilities include reception, 15 consulting rooms, treatment rooms and ancillary accommodation, staff amenities and an on-site pharmacy. Additional space above the pharmacy was included in the design to allow for future expansion of services.

Externally a welcoming entrance is created through the use of double-height glazing and panels of decorative brickwork; coloured glass wraps around the two prominent corners on the Amberton Terrace elevation to create a bright, active frontage and provide views and light to key areas of the building.  There is ample parking provision and secure cycle storage is backed up with shower and change facilities to actively encourage cycling as an alternative to car travel.

Materials were selected for their robustness and long life expectancy: the building is predominantly of brick construction and the use of a steel frame is reflected visually with steel beams to the glazing and entrance canopy.
