This in-patient Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) serves people with acute mental health needs. Designed for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the scheme forms part of a programme of modernisation of mental healthcare facilities across Cumbria and supports the “needs led” service it aims to provide.
The refurbishment and extension replaces dark, cramped conditions with light bright spaces and single en suite facilities to respect the privacy and dignity of patients.
Whilst facilities are secure and provide seclusion zones and a rapid response entrance, the building maintains the P+HS ethos of healing environments. The 10 bedded unit incorporates familiar non-institutional materials, ample natural light and views and access to outdoor spaces.
The mix of traditional and modern materials creates a contemporary yet homely and welcoming atmosphere within a domestic scale vastly improving patient experience and providing better facilities for both staff and visitors.
