Seaham Primary Care Centre
Working under the LIFT framework for Accent, this new Primary Care building formed part of a regeneration strategy for St John’s Square in Seaham. Developed by NHS Co Durham & Darlington in conjunction with Community Ventures and working closely with Durham County Council, the brief called for a flexible and sustainable new health centre.
The development was a core strand in delivering the PCT’s strategy in an area of particularly poor health and social and economic deprivation, supporting:
• Improved access
• Bringing care closer to home
• Enhancing the care environment
It also formed part of a wider improvement of public realm space in Seaham, which aimed to contribute to the physical, social and economic regeneration of the area.
Sensitively designed to complement existing surroundings and capitalise on views out, the building significantly enhances the area and provides a welcoming and non-clinical environment with plentiful natural light, artwork and colour. The use of brick, sustainable timber and green roofs reflect the setting in the heart of Seaham, creating a vision for the future.
Facilities include two GP practices, urgent care centre, pharmacy and NHS and community meeting rooms. Services include dermatology, continence services, speech therapy, audiology, diagnostics, podiatry, dietetics, physiotherapy, mental health and drug and alcohol services.
Finalist at BBH, RIBA and RICS awards.
