South Tyneside Surgical Centre
South Tyneside NHS FT’s vision for surgical services was to modernise the existing environment and deliver all general surgery, gynaecology and minor orthopaedic surgery from a single surgical centre. P+HS were commissioned to provide a reconfiguration and refurbishment of the existing Wards 1 and 4 to enable more efficient day surgery care and optimisation of bed provision for surgical inpatient care. The scheme would contribute to the Trust’s Cost Improvement Programme and allow a reinvestment within medical provision.
To fully understand the existing working practice we spent time with clinical staff to observe and monitor how care was being delivered within the existing ward layouts, following which we undertook a series of healthcare planning exercises to consider both the model of care and the building layout.
The new Surgical Centre offers an integrated service providing seamless care for surgical patients. The new facility was designed for a model of care which ensures that elective care demands are met, including optimal productivity, whilst offering a centre of excellence for surgical specialities. The Reconfiguration of services into one defined area delivered value for money and efficient service for patients. Beds are used more efficiently and there is a clear definition between medical and surgical in-patient provision.
The scheme is equipped with the latest monitoring equipment for safety and calm, light-filled interiors create an environment designed to enhance patients’ experience.
