St Benedict’s Hospice
St. Benedict’s Hospice cares for patients with life limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones through difficult times and beyond. This is a dedicated specialist centre for integrated palliative care services which provides an outstanding inpatient unit both for patients and their families.
Following extensive consultation with staff, patients and the community, it was decided to replace the city’s outdated hospice which was deemed no longer fit for purpose. Funded by the NHS and supported by the Hospice charity, progress was unusually rapid, moving from conceptual design to detailed planning in four months with a build programme of 12 months.
There is a feeling of optimism, space and light; the generous site with its extensive, thoughtfully landscaped external spaces, wide corridors and spacious bedrooms all evidence a design developed with the utmost attention to detail and the avoidance of a clinical environment. The vision behind St Benedict’s was to create a facility that had the feel of a hotel, a sense of peace and serenity and where there was plentiful access to outdoor spaces. This vision was achieved through collaborative working amongst all parties, including patients, families and staff that make St Benedict’s their home on a daily basis.
The building includes 14 single inpatient bedrooms, day care, lymphoedema and outpatient services services as well as an education centre and facilities for community nursing teams.
The completed scheme is one of which the entire community is proud; successfully delivering a step change in the quality of end of life services in the area and inspiring confidence in the future of palliative care for the community. Winner of Project of the Year at CENE 2014, the design has also received commendations from Building Better Healthcare and Constructing Excellence.
