Walkergate Hospital in Newcastle is a new specialist rehabilitation hospital, built on the site of the former Northern Regional Health office on Benfield Road.
The scheme provides a whole range of specialist inpatient and outpatient services for rehabilitation, including neuro-rehab, and for patients who are minimally conscious or in a persistent vegetative state. Also on the site as part of the development, are services for electronic aids development and the regional adapted vehicle test track, where users can be assessed for their suitability for driving on the road.
A key feature of the scheme is the art installation, as part of the Healing Arts programme of the NHS. Several artists were commissioned to provide a range of installations, including the new multi-faith chapel, internal colour schemes and external landscape, using a £150,000 budget.
The scheme is procured under the Private Finance Initiative, with P+HS acting for the winning development team UME and Clugston.
