Opening of MAIN's Pathways to Independence Centre

Attending the grand opening of MAIN’s Pathways to Independence Centre on Friday, we were blown away by the transformation it has undergone in less than three months. Progression photos displayed at the event really brought home just how far this space has come.

Working closely with the charity, our team at P+HS Architects helped create an inclusive, welcoming, and functional environment, redesigning the space to better support individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and complex needs.

The newly renovated centre now features an accessible kitchen with adjustable-height sinks for individuals who use wheelchairs, along with dedicated areas designed to help children and young adults develop essential life skills. From making a bed and doing laundry to cooking and using household appliances, the space provides a safe and supportive setting for individuals to gain the practical skills they need to live more independently.

Hayley Hunter led the interior design, conducting a case study on autism-inclusive design to ensure every element was carefully considered to promote independence and safety in a calm and accessible environment.

A special mention also goes to Pete Stead, who has been instrumental in this project, not only through his work at P+HS but also in his new role as Chair of the Board of Trustees for MAIN. His leadership and dedication will continue to support the charity in delivering vital services to the community.

Reflecting on the project, Pete shared,

"I am personally humbled by everyone's efforts in getting this amazing new facility open. As the new Chair of Trustees, I am committed to ensuring we keep progressing and developing so that we can help even more children and young adults with autism and other needs."
