Topping out Leicester’s new Endoscopy Unit

P+HS Architects, in collaboration with Henry Brothers Construction and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, recently marked a significant milestone in the development of the new Endoscopy Unit at Leicester General Hospital with a topping out ceremony. This event celebrated the completion of a key stage in the construction of the specialist facility, which is strategically located adjacent to the East Midlands Planned Care Centre.

The ceremony was attended by UHL executives, members of the endoscopy department, and representatives from the construction team, all of whom are committed to delivering a state-of-the-art healthcare environment for the region. The topping out event symbolizes the progression of this crucial project, which is set to enhance healthcare provision for the people of Leicester and the surrounding counties. As part of the site's landscaping process, a tree was planted to commemorate the occasion, symbolising growth and the long-term benefits this new facility will bring to the community.

Simon Barton, Deputy Chief Executive of UHL, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s progress: “We are thrilled to celebrate this important milestone, as this new endoscopy unit represents our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality healthcare. Endoscopy plays a critical role in both diagnostics and treatment, and the new unit will ensure we continue to offer top-tier services to our patients in Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland.”

The project team includes key collaborators such as project manager Selcon, quantity surveyor Rider Levitt Bucknall, principal designer Stephen George & Partners, structural engineer Curtins, and mechanical and electrical engineer CPW. With completion scheduled for late summer 2025, the new endoscopy unit is projected to serve approximately 17,500 patients annually once operational, further strengthening UHL’s ability to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment services.
