Bassetlaw Emergency Care Village
Bassetlaw Emergency Care Village
We’re proud to have worked with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals on the Bassetlaw Emergency Village, an amazing £23 million transformation at Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop. Completed in late 2024, this modern emergency care hub brings urgent and emergency services under one roof, creating a seamless journey for patients and a collaborative environment for staff.
From the very start, we involved patients, families and staff in shaping the vision. The result? A facility that delivers fast, efficient, and compassionate care which was exactly what the community told us they needed.
At the heart of the design is a cohesive masterplan, bringing together Emergency Care, Paediatric ED, the Children’s Assessment Unit (CAU), and Acute Treatment Centre (ATC). A streamlined ‘one door approach’ leads patients through a welcoming reception and into calm, well-organised spaces, all strategically designed to reduce stress during difficult times and improve clinical flow. New build and refurbished areas are fully integrated to ensure a smooth, accessible layout throughout.
Behind the scenes, optimisation was key: staff have better visibility, travel distances are shorter, and patient journeys are quicker and more intuitive. The design does exactly what it was supposed to do, making things easier for everyone.
A major milestone for the project was the complete removal of RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete), making Bassetlaw Hospital the first in the UK to eliminate this outdated material entirely. Safety, longevity and peace of mind built right in.

Our interior design team brought the Children’s Unit to life with playful, nature-inspired touches. Lush forest graphics sweep across the walls and staff bases, while friendly woodland creatures pop up throughout the space to guide and comfort young patients. It’s cheerful, calming and thoughtfully designed to reassure children of all ages.
Working closely with the Trust, we implemented a bespoke art strategy that runs throughout the Emergency Village, ensuring a consistent, comforting experience across departments. In the CAU, the artwork, colours and textures are all carefully chosen to support emotional wellbeing.
Charitable support added the finishing touches, from calming lighting and sensory equipment to TVs in bays and waiting areas; small things that make a big difference for families facing tough days.
The Bassetlaw Emergency Village is the future of emergency care design because it champions resilience, efficiency and is wholeheartedly patient-focused.
