Glen Lodge

As part of a city wide initiative to improve older care and accommodation provision in York, the City Council commissioned P+HS Architects to extend an established and popular Extra Care facility at Heworth Green.

The new scheme provides an additional 27 dwellings at Glen Lodge and includes a three storey extension of 25 apartments as well as two new bungalows on the site.

Working within the constraints of the site and existing building, our team developed proposals with input from the Council, local community and Glen Lodge residents. Particular consideration was given to the relationship between the new extension and the older building with several design options tabled for consideration before final proposals were agreed. The developmentā€™s scale and mass responds well to its taller residential neighbour to the south and its angle in relation to the street adds interest. Substantial planting along the eastern boundary with the new block set well back from the highway behind a large secure garden provides a unified landscape setting. The challenge of access to the bungalows and for servicing was resolved by relocating the access road and making additional provision for parking.

The development is designed as dementia-ready: twelve of the new apartments are open plan to help with visual connections, orientation and navigation. The scheme's completion coincided with the extension of extra care provision to 24 hours, so that people with more intensive support needs have more choice and can stay in their homes for longer as their needs change.
