MAIN's Pathways to Independence Centre

MAIN’s Pathways to Independence Centre underwent a significant transformation in just under three months, creating a purpose-designed environment that supports individuals with autism, learning disabilities, and complex needs. The renovation of the centre focused on designing a functional, welcoming, and inclusive space, tailored to promote independence and help users develop essential life skills.

The updated facility now includes an accessible kitchen with adjustable-height sinks, a dedicated learning area for household tasks such as making a bed and doing laundry, as well as cooking and using household appliances. These spaces provide a safe and supportive setting where individuals can build confidence and learn practical skills for everyday life.

Additional works included recommissioning the former main entrance, new reception and ancillary accommodation. Future phases of work will seek to create a new low stimulus environment, a registered changing places suite together with space for young adults and also a therapy courtyard.

The interior design was led with a strong focus on autism-inclusive principles, ensuring that all aspects of the space contribute to a calm and accessible atmosphere. Considerations such as robust flooring, easy-to-clean surfaces, and clearly defined entranceways with painted door frames help create a structured yet adaptable setting. A carefully selected soft colour palette was also implemented to enhance comfort and reduce sensory overload. Additional details, such as displaying the children’s New Year’s goals in speech bubbles on the walls, have been incorporated to create a more personal, encouraging atmosphere while maintaining a structured environment for learning and skill development.

This project has been shaped by a strong collaboration, with expertise in both architectural planning and interior design working together to create an environment that supports MAIN’s mission. The completion of the renovations in February 2025 marked a significant step in expanding the centre’s ability to empower individuals through personalised support, workshops, and skill-building activities, helping them to achieve greater independence and quality of life.
