The scheme was won in a design led competition to regenerate the former ‘Rivers’ area in Middlesbrough, replacing Victorian back to back houses no longer fit for habitation. As one of the first residential scheme in the country to receive multi agency financial support, P+HS developed the business cases needed to secure funding.
The scheme provided 111 new homes for sale, rent or shared equity, fully integrated and focused around a new town park. The wider site was planned to include offices and workspaces. Art and landscaping were key elements in the scheme, reflecting the determination to transform the area.
The project won a Civic Trust Commendation and a BT ‘Green City’ Award, whilst the railings and other streetscape features, designed and made by Allan Francis of 101% Art, have become a local landmark.
