Sunderland Emergency Department

Working through the Scape framework with Willmott Dixon we created a vastly improved new Emergency Department for Sunderland Royal Hospital. A complex programme of new build and refurbishment was carefully phased to ensure continuity of service as works progressed within the live hospital.

The new design has cut waiting times and smoothed patient flow, providing LEAN working, flexible capacity and improved diagnostics. Child and adult departments are now completely separate, creating much more appropriate surroundings and a calmer, more therapeutic environment .

The scheme includes resuscitation, high acuity, special ambulatory assessment, see and manage areas, bereavement suite, family waiting area, GP assessment, integrated admissions unit and diagnostics suite. A dedicated lift gives direct access from the emergency department to an existing 6-storey ward block for patients being admitted. Ambulance parking is extended and new staff support accommodation and meeting rooms are provided.
