The Endeavour Unit
The Endeavour Unit
In parallel to the refurbishment of Chemotherapy and LINAC facilities at James Cook University Hospital, P+HS Architects were commissioned for a new £18m satellite outpatient facility: The Endeavour Unit.
Working in partnership with NBBJ Architects who developed the concept design, P+HS undertook the detailed design and technical delivery for the project. The new building is highly visible on the site, close to the existing Radiotherapy Department and with a sheltered, dedicated patient drop off zone to its main entrance.
Interiors are of the highest quality, more akin to an hotel than a healthcare facility, with high specification materials - stone, porcelain and wood as well as specially commissioned artwork throughout. The design uses a narrow plan, providing daylight and natural ventilation to all working areas.
Patient areas are at ground level, accessed via a spacious double height central waiting area that is broken down into smaller more intimate clusters that associate directly with the Outpatient Clinic, CT Scanner and the LINAC Suites, minimising patient travel distances. Patient flows and way finding are deliberately simple, with minimum need for signage. The efficient circulation design meant that more generous space was available for the central public 'heart' of the building, adding to the building's calm quality.
The project has achieved BREEAM Excellent and includes ground source heat pumps, high levels of insulation, solar shading and an enhanced landscape strategy.
